Lots of audition programs such as "Superstar K", "Korea's Got Talent", "Star Audition" are springing up every year in Korea and a wide diversity of contestants take part in this kind of programs. In 2009, the total number of people who participated in the first "Superstar K" audition is 710,000 and as years go by, this number increases to 1.34 million in 2010 and 1.93 million in 2011. Its figures are equivalent to four percent of Korea's population. As this phenomenon is going on, it might sit ill with Korean society.
The American Idol was broadcast on the television in America in 2002 borrowed from sensationally popular audition program like Australian Idol and has had much influence all over the world. Korea is in the grip of audition fever as well now. Accordingly, many people worry about bad impacts on these audition programs. Some senior students in high school put their college entrance exam and they did not even tell their parents about their participation in the audition. They just turn away their school and devote themselves to audition. Besides, criminals are taking advantage of the new trend of audition fever. One person claiming to be a talent scout appeared at a preliminary audition in Busan posing as a manager for famous entertainers and received money from some contestants by promising them fame and fortune. On top of it, broadcasters force participants to show their private life and make them fall so low as objects of pity in order to build a greater audience. Also, one of social malaises in audition is the misinterpretation of a dream, life, success and awareness in music.
Side effects might be remaining even if the popularity of this fever starts waning and audition programs will be pulled off the air bit by bit. So, we don't just look at this phenomenon as audition fever, it is a time to think of social influences and find the way to cope with side effects of audition.
