Due to the lack of facilities in Gyeonggi-do, competition rate of some public kindergarten is '6:1'. Parents are in stiff competition for their children's kindergarten entrance which is like getting blood from stone .
Gyeonggi-do don't have enough kindergarten to fill the demand. Moreover, from next year, the new way of selecting kindergartener, a lottery system will replace the old ways, recommendation and order of arrival system.
Now, kindergarten in the province accommodates 166,000 children in 1,046 of the Kindergarten attached to Public Primary School, and 988 of private kindergarten
Provincial Education office is planning to found more public kindergarten next year to accommodate about 5,000 children, and private kindergarten will hold about 11,000 children by foundation. If the foundation of public and private kindergarten go as planned, whole kindergartener in the province will increase by 182,000. Each kindergarten is now accepting applications or has already finished.
However, even this size is less than half of 380thousand children the age about 3~5(Last year's standard population statistics in Gyeonggi-do). Even after considering many children go to nursery or institute, the size of kindergarten is absurdly insufficient.
For these reasons, parents are busy worrying to send their kids to kindergarten.
Especially, by the expansion in educational expenses support from next year, the competition for public kindergarten admission is notorious stiff because of its free education.
Private kindergarten can cost maximum of 14 times than public kindergarten which means most house need to burden no small money even though the government support the 220 thousand-won monthly for education fee. Even the number of persons to be admitted in public kindergarten increases, 38500 is the maximum, and that is only a quater of the private's next year enrollment.
Sampyeong Public Kindergarten in Bundang-si has recently closed registration and the competition rate was 5.6:1. Also, Saegyo Kindergarten in Osan-si rated 5.5:1, and Kindergarten attached to Sanui Public Primary School in Suwon-si rated 16:9. Most of other public kindergarten had same results.
One parent from the internet site of Gyeongi Provincion Education office said that she thought her child surely can enter public kindergarten but recently the number admitted in public kindergarten nearby has rapidly decreased. Moreover, private kindergarten already closed registrations, so if draws a losing number child cannot enter any kindergarten.
Other netizen also said, "It is practically impossible to enter public kindergarten. The competition rate is already 6:1, even it has 3 days left until the application deadline. It is so shocking."
A press officer from Provincial Education office said, "We know that public kindergarten is absurdly insufficient but it is the reality that we cannot just found kindergarten due to our budget."
