Al Gore, ex-vice president of United States makes a speech at the opening ceremony of ‘the 3rd International Conference on Green Purchasing’ that is held at gyeonggi arts center on October 21.

“We can help the earth’s crisis according to how to purchase goods.” Al Gore who is active as ecoactivist and was ex-vice president attended International Conference on Green Purchasing. He gave his opinion saying “Now changes thinking about the earth’s environment.”

He visited gyeonggi arts center to attend International Conference on Green Purchasing held by International Green Purchasing Network (IGPN), International Council for Local Environment Initiatives (ICLEI) and emphasized the importance of ‘Green Purchasing’.

He said that “The more we know environment, the more we scared at it.” and “Now unparalleled events happened without previous notice and it means that people changes thinking about the earth’s environment” through keynote address.

He also said “Rapidly increasing population has also a big effect on the earth’s environment and it means the relationship between environment and a human is more important than the past.” and emphasized that “We have to apply method of purchasing goods and services to the earth’s crisis help.”

Al Gore who was a Novel Peace prize winner in 2007 and the 45th vice president of United States compiled a variety of environmental books like ‘Earth in the BALANCE: Ecology and the Human Sprite’, ‘QUO VADIS UBIQUITOUS’ and has a most effect on climatic change all over the world.

The opening ceremony starts an opening address of Yamamoto Ryoichi who is the president of IGPN and continues a welcoming speech of Kim Yong Su who is the mayor of Suwon and the ceremony’s organizing chairman, a congratulatory address of Lee Man Ui (the minister of environment), Kim Mon Su (a governor of gyeonggi-do) and Otto Zimmermann (a secretary-general of ICLEI).

Meanwhile, ‘International Conference on Green Purchasing’ that is opening to promote environment-friendly purchasing all over the world is held in Suwon in the third after Sendai of Japan in 2004, Barcelona of Spain in 2006 and takes on pre-Copenhagen before the 15th UNFCCC(United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) opening in Copenhagen of Denmark in December.

International Conference on Green Purchasing that starts the opening ceremony and is held for 3 days joins 1,500 persons including governments of 70 countries, environmental organizations, businesses and the persons concerned NGO. This ceremony also devises ‘how to solve climatic change through green purchasing’.

On October 23, the last day of the ceremony, ‘the Declaration of Suwon’ that demands reduction of greenhouse gases emission and activation of green purchasing will be adopted through overall discussion.

Wonder Girls enters the top 100 of the main Billboard chart

The Wonder Girls, one of the most popular Korea’s groups(singer), and Jin-Young Park, who is producer, have the news conference about ‘The Wonder Girls’ American Billboard chart entry’ in Chungdam-dong on last October 23. ‘Nobody’, which was unveiled in the United States, ranked 76th on the October Billboard chart hot 100. The song was written by Jin-Young Park.

“It has been the first time since 1980 that an Oriental singer enters the top 100 of the main Billboard chart. We break the Orientals’ wall. We will have performance in the United States and Europe, not in Korea,” Jin-Young said.

This record has the important meaning, because a Korean singer, who has a Korean record company name and sings a Korean composer’s song, enters the top 100 of the main Billboard chart at first time.

On the interview, they spoke about their last stories, how they could enter the United States record market, and future plans. Sun-Mi wept when group members said their last difficult stories.

“When I went to America, I slept in tears every day. It took me a long time to adapt to new environment. I am too young, so I was afraid and lonely. English was difficult. But members gave me energy. I realized that I love music and dance very much,” Sun-Mi said. (She is 17 years old in Korea.)

Members said that English was the most difficult thing when they were active in the United States. So they studied English six hours each day.

The Wonder Girls, who released an album in English in the summer, targeted American elementary school students for last seven months. It also performed on the Jonas Brothers concert tour. It met fans on a street and taught its song and dance. Through this course, it gained popularity gradually.

The Wonder Girls will release its first album in America next January. It will comprise English version of Korea hit songs and new six songs.

Now, they returned to have a rest at home for a season. Girls said that they wanted to eat 김치찌개(Kimchi soup) and 간장게장(crab preserved in soy sauce).

The Wonder Girls, the five-member band, consists of Sun-Ye(Sun), Ye-Eun(Yenny), Sun-Mi(Mimi), So-Hee and Yu-Bin. They made their debut in Korea in the last 2007, and in the United States in this summer. They belong to JYP Entertainment. In Korea, they had many hit songs, including ‘Tell Me’, ‘So hot’, and ‘Nobody’.

Toyota 'Camry’ Challenge Hyundai Motor

‘New car effect’ will shake up the auto market


Toyota Motor officially released four models including the Camry and Prius. I think Toyota cars are still more expensive than those of Hyundai and Kia, but consumers may find stronger appeal once the price gap narrows.

As Toyota officially launched on the local market with lower price than anticipated, domestic imported car market is expected to be changed. Toyota Korea had a presentation of the new four models including Toyota brand debut and Camry with the employees of Japan headquarters at Grand Hyatt Seoul on 20th.

The Camry is priced at 34.9 million won, the hybrid version of the Camry at 45.9 million won, the Prius at 37.9 million won, and the RAV4 2WD at 32.1 million won (34.9 million won 4WD), respectively, according to industry estimates. This price is down from the expected 30-50 million-won range and is competitive even compared with domestic companies. The company aims to sell a total of 500 vehicles a month this year and 700 a month in 2010.

The Camry is likely to threat its competitors, the Honda Accord and the Nissan Altima and impact on the top-of-the-line models, Sonata and Grandeur.

In particular, medium sedan called the Camry is to be released with a low price tag of 34.9 million won. The Camry is cheaper than its rivaling models such as Honda Accord 2.4 (35.9 million won) and Nissan Altima 2.5 (36.9 million won). The Camry has an integral navigation system, rear camera, sunroof, and air bag for protecting knees. With the additional options, the Camry is more competitive. The price which is mid-priced between Hyundai’s Grandeur TG 2.7 and Sonata is expected to absorb the needs for domestic cars.

The hybrid electric car Prius is priced at 37.9 million won, from the expected over 40 million won. The Prius with its 29.2 kilometers per liter fuel economy boasts higher fuel efficiency than any other vehicle available in Korea and is popular in Japan.

The urban type SUV RAV4 is about 20 million won less expensive than Honda CR-V (36.9 million won 4WD, 33.9 million won 2WD) so the Prius is cost competitive. As RAV4
is mid-priced between Hyundai’s SUV Santa Fe and Tucson ix just as the Camry it is expected to be matched domestic cars as well as imported cars.

Toyota has the five places dealerships total including three places in Seoul (Gangnam, Seocho, Yongsan) and Bundang, Busan. Toyota is planning to open more dealerships in Daejun and Gwangju next year for the consumer’s convenience.

The drinking culture is different as many as various countries in the world are different each other. Women to be shorter and heavier in the future?

Recently, a research has announced that, in about 400 years, women’s height will be two centimeters shorter and their weight will be one kilogram heavier. It may sound like a tall tale since women are becoming taller and slimmer these days.

However, Steven Stearns, a biologist at Yale, has been researching 14,000 residents in Framingham, Massachusetts from 1948 to now, and according to his assertion, women are evolving into shorter and heavier figures.

For around 60 years’ research period, the residents’ generation has been changed. With 2,238 women’s data, the researchers adjusted the data for height, weight, cholesterol level, blood pressure, genitalia condition and other elements related to pregnancy.

Based on the survey, rather short and heavy women were more likely to have a baby than tall and skinny women. Furthermore, women with low level of cholesterol and blood pressure could easily have babies. Surprisingly, those features were not directly inherited from one’s mother but one’s grandmother.
With this sort of evolution continuing, in 2409, women will be two centimeters higher and one kilogram heavier. What is more, first pregnancy will be five months earlier than now, lengthening the time of menopause ten months longer.

Professor Stearns said, “What is interesting is that genes affect much more that socio-cultural effect. Biological elements evolve in the direction of amplifying reproduction. ”
Their findings were released recently in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and they drew attention from many other science journals including Telegraph in UK and Science Daily in U.S.A.

Nine Teachers out of Ten are Under Stress

A research shows that nine teachers out of ten are under stress and it affects their work negatively.


The Korean Teachers & Educational Worker’s Union conducted a survey of 2,222 school teachers on the reason and the actual condition of their stress. According to this survey, 90.8% of the respondents are burdened with too much stress and 78.8% of teachers are badly affected to their jobs because of it. The problem is that only 56.6% of them have made efforts to handle themselves under pressure. That is, most of teachers are suffering from stress which has a direct influence on work, but only few of them seek to get rid of stress.


More importantly, 71.9% of those polled replied that they have gone through physical discomforts due to the high-levels of stress. These physical symptoms were found a lot more common among teachers who work in the big cities (73.4%), have big classes (78.7%) and have less years of experience in teaching (73.9%).
Symptoms generally include extreme fatigue, body aches, and headaches, but only 16.1% of teachers sought professional medical help.

With questionnaire asking the cause of their stress, a large number of teachers answered that it was because of the mistaken education policies (41.14%) and some other reasons were their massive works (18.1%) and the conflict with directors (15.3%). In addition, they also replied that the possible solutions to cope with stress were democratic administration of schools (36.4%), assurance of time for research and recess such as sabbatical years (16.48%), and reduction for the routine work (16.22%).

Rosy view for the country’s employment situation

Following President Lee Myung-bak’s warning about a prematurely rosy view for the country’s employment situation, the administration yesterday announced a plan to spend 3.5 trillion won ($3.03 billion) to create up to 650,000 jobs.

“The economy is improving, but the job situation is still serious, we need toplace top priority on addressing this problem.” Lee was quoted as saying duringan emergency economic meeting by his spokeswoman, Kim Eun-hye.
"Some peopleclaim that the job market will improve in one or two years, but it is just anempty promise but a political slogan,” Lee said during a meeting with senior
economic officials.

According to Kim, the president pointed out that employment tends to be a lagging indicator. and he also sought the support of the Grand National Party to approve bills linked to deregulation to nurture the country’s service industry, linking the matter with job creation.

“The president asked the administration to look at the urgency of the issue and come up with diversified job policies. Because the ordinary citizens are still struggling, so it is premature for the government to relax,” Lee said. “We must
continue fighting the crisis by speedily spending state budgets.” she said,

Lee also said Korea’s most pressing challenge is resolving the mismatching amongst the job seekers and employers.

“We need a fundamental resolution to this problem. Like many advanced countries,a tailored vocational training system should be built by linking the academia and the industries,” Lee was quoted as saying, ordering the Education, Labor andKnowledge Economy ministries to come up with a plan as soon as possible.

He urged the governing and opposition parties to expedite government-proposed revisions that would remove or ease outdated regulations in the services industry and thereby help create more work.

The Office of the Prime Minister said the government will continue to inject money into a temporary employment program through next year to create over half a million jobs. As part of the efforts, the government will extend the deadline of the state-backed employment assistant program, which offers 100,000 jobs. The program was initially due to end at the end of this year.

Sharing Hangeul with CiaCia Tribe

In last August Hangeul was adopted as a writing system of an Indonesian tribe in the Sulawesi area, BauBau city in Buton Island. They have their own tongue but there was no system to present it so their language had been in danger to be extinct. By the adoption, however, it escape from dying tongue.

Hangeul was motivated by a ruler’s desire to help his people(Kin Sejong). Hangeul characters’ shapes are derived from the shapes of the lip, tongue and throat when they speak. It can represent each syllable which conveys the sounds of spoken words into the image of letters.

Strict Valuaton on Teachers Improves Quality of Education

Judy Lynn Genshaft,the preesident of American Council on Education, visited Korea to join the international universty president forum. She refered on the valuation system on teachers in America in an interview. She said every school and step of system in America are following those valuation system by law, and the result of it is linked directly with salary and promotion. Adding this, she emphasized Korea should adopt this valuation system to elevate teachers' responsibty. According to her, America is operating firm valuation system on teachers' accomplishment despite it has a systematized teacher's union. She also emphasized that improving teachers' responsiblity by this kind of evaluating system will muster teachers' competitive power and students' accomplishment both.

In my opinion, teachers shoud have competitive power because they lead the new knowledge Based socety. I believe teachers' responsibility is a decisve factor in quality of eduacation. Teachers have such a heavy responsibilty in society, so the evaluating system will be a very good device to measure performance of their duties. It goes wthout saying that quality of public education will improve. Therefore there is much room for consideration in Korea, too.

France Gives Students Cash!

There is a controversy about a new policy that may undermine the value of education.
On October, 7th, International Herald Tribune (IHT) reported that the French government announced the plan of paying cash to students who study hard.

It is an education policy attempting to increase both low attendance rate and graduation rate.
France introduced the cash incentive policy which gives up to around 10,000 euros per class.
Literally, if a student does well in school, he or she can earn money.

On October 5th, this program went into effect in three vocational schools in the areas of Paris as a trial run for future participating schools.
The students of these schools will set a goal for the average attendance rate; if they attain it, the government will award between 2,000 euros and 10,000 euros per class.

This money can be used for any purpose ranging from driving lessons to school field trips.

Michell Blanche, the representative of Paris school district, said that this support program is a “creative attempt” that violates no moral issues.

However, others disagree.

The first objection questions whether money is the proper incentive to motivate students.

Jean-Jacques Ahjang, the representative of ‘FCPE’, a left-wing parent organization, argued that this program is an abuse of the power of school administration.

Philip Beurangdo of ‘PEEP'; a conservative parent organization, said, “It is not desirable that money becomes the leverage that motivates students.”

An independent group called SOS Education, took it one step further, criticizing the program through a blog by saying that the French government is bribing students with money and is undermining the value of the French Republic.

Regardless of which side is correct, one fact remains unchanged: as the high school dropout rate rises quickly, especially in minority and low-income districts of France, the voice for reform is getting just as loud. Currently, 13% (around 15,000) of the French young are entering the workforce without high school diplomas. The riot of the young immigrants that broke out 4 years ago clearly shows the frustration that many are feeling.

National Academic Assessment Examination("일제고사") is that Korea schools have examination to evaluate student’s achievements.

This examination gives rise to complication between government and many people as students, parents and teachers. Groups of parents of students and teachers will refuse to this examination and they are going to educational experience slated for October 14 ~15. So they are expected to friction with the education authority.

Yoon sook ja, policy planning chairperson, claims “students that have trouble to study are founded due to this examination but governments failed to come up with solutions.

In my opinions, our education policy always debated the pros and cons and cause many complications. Now, students of our country are plunged in excessive competition of entrance examinations and they spend the day on the desk to study. In this excessive competition, we could see the word as “hell entrance examination”

I think that National Academic Assessment Examination gives stress to students because operation of this examination not for students and this examination make precedence. I hope that Education policy will concerned for students.

Robert Ramsey who is a professor in the University of Maryland gave a special lecture on the subject of ‘Why we celebrate Hangeul Proclamation Day’ in KORUS house in Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States of America on October 6, 2009.

‘Hangeul is better than any other letters in the world’. Robert Ramsey who is a professor in the University of Maryland emphasized over and over again Hangeul’s superiority and a hidden meaning of Hangeul invention, that is to say significant humanism through special lecture celebrating Hangeul Proclamation Day – ‘Why we celebrate Hangeul Proclamation Day’ in KORUS house in Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States of America on October 6, 2009.

A linguist Ramsey said that Hangeul is a scientific letter connecting voice and letter systematically. He valued Hangeul as great achievement not discovered any other letters and a commemorative event. However he said that the Chinese would oppose that suggestion because it is related to political reasons like a national pride. He also said that most of holidays in the world are related to political event, a change of season and religion but Hangeul Proclamation Day has a special meaning because it is a commemoration Day thinking about development of human’s mind, idea and accomplishment.

Prof. Ramsey studied Gyeongsang-do(경상도) and Hamgyeong-do(함경도) dialects in the 15th and 16th century at a Yonsei University and a graduate school of Seoul National University and lectured in the Korean language at Columbia University. He has taught the Korean language over twenty years at the University of Maryland and he is famous as holding a special ceremony annually Hangeul Proclamation Day.

Meanwhile Kwon Myung Won who is exhibiting calligraphy works celebrating Hangeul Proclamation Day showed people writing letters using a writing brush. In addition about 70 students who taking lectures about the Korean language at the University of Maryland recited Korea poems like ‘엄마야 누나야’ and ‘진달래꽃’ by Kim So Wol(김소월), ‘꽃’ by Kim Chun Su(김춘수) and ‘국화 옆에서’ by Seo Jung Ju(서정주).
