For Whom 'Democratic People's Republic of Korea' Exist?

Some of North Korean defectors in a recent survey said that they had been an object of medical experiment on a living body. According to KDI(Korea Development Institute), Marcus Noland who is belonged to the America Peterson Institute presented the survey result recently while he published "the oppression and punishment that North Korea defector had experienced in North Korea" as a subject on KDI seminar. This result was made out by the people who escaped from North Korea that composed 1,346 people who live in China and 300 people who live in South Korea since 2004 to 2008.

In this survey, 55% of North Korea defectors who live in china answered that they had been an object of medical experiment on a live body, 5% of the defectors answered that they had witnessed murder of new-born baby. In addition, 51% of them who live in South Korea said that they had seen execution and 60% of defectors who live in China replied that they had witnessed the death which contributed serious torture. Deprivation of providing meals is very common so that almost everyone said that they had been suffered.

92.1% of them pointed out that because of the policy of North Korea, the country's economic situation is getting increasingly worse. Especially 87.3% of them answered that they had thought that North Korea must be unified with South Korea when they had lived in their home country.
30% of them who live in China and 33% who live in South Korea spoke that they had lost their family in the period of great famine and 43%of defectors who live in China and 56% who in South Korea replied that majority number of people don’t know about the food-aid shipments to North Korea and they guessed that just very few of them are aided by that.

In addition 41.9% of defectors have pessimistic view toward the situation of North Korea. Moreover N.K's high class people have somewhat antinomic tendency too; for instance in the part of the capitalism acceptance like the ultraleftist campaign that advocates to liquidate all of the capitalistic point in every single sector which is violated first by the upper class.

▲A picture which is distributed by a defector recently. The dancers' dress provocatively and it seems little bit unproper in the country which rejects capitalistic point. Moreover it is performed at the privileged class's secret party.

According to Myeong Chul-jin(43) who had escaped from North Korea recently and lives in Seoul said that he had enjoyed South Korea’s soap drama with his friends when he had lived in Pyeong yang. He added that, throwing off the authorities’ trail, many residents enjoy the drama secretly. Newsweekly time internet edition reported that many South Korea’s soap dramas are brought into North Korea with recent Korean wave. In North Korea’s black market, nevertheless the more expensive price Korean’s drama is more popular than the U.S one.

In North Korea, the opportunity to introduce foreign movie is limited to Pyeong-yang Film Festival which is held per 2 years. Nationalization broadcast televises Disney movie like ‘Snow White’ or ‘Cindellera’ sometimes. Time indicated that since 1990s, some people (privileged class) had enjoyed foreign film or video, however, it is the first time that kind of drama(foreign, especially Korean) wide spread like this.

It is crime in North Korea that to spread or watch South Korea’s drama, because N.K considers it as a behavior which diffuses enemy’s ideology. Recently, N.K did major raid crackdown which was intended to university students who are major consumer of the drama and the smugglers who work between China and N.K.

In the last year, September one of defector’s group in Seoul asserted that there were many university students in N.K had been detected because of watching Korean movie called Hae woon Dae(해운대) at school computer zone.

Just ten years ago, the student’s will be sentenced to five years in camp. Nowadays, nowever, they are just sentenced 3 months in camp or labor punishment. This flow is not because of the change of ideology in N.K, just because they can’t send every single people who watch it (too many people) to camp. Some students who are prosecuted give some cigarettes to the controller or even the students avoid the punishment by giving foreign drama or video.

  1. I always find it interesting to hear reports from North Korean refugees. I don't know how much to believe them, but I think that they do provide valuable insight into the day-to-day lives of North Koreans.

    I don't understand this sentence:
"for instance in the part of the capitalism acceptance like the ultraleftist campaign that advocates to liquidate all of the capitalistic point in every single sector which is violated first by the upper class."
