Sharing Hangeul with CiaCia Tribe

In last August Hangeul was adopted as a writing system of an Indonesian tribe in the Sulawesi area, BauBau city in Buton Island. They have their own tongue but there was no system to present it so their language had been in danger to be extinct. By the adoption, however, it escape from dying tongue.

Hangeul was motivated by a ruler’s desire to help his people(Kin Sejong). Hangeul characters’ shapes are derived from the shapes of the lip, tongue and throat when they speak. It can represent each syllable which conveys the sounds of spoken words into the image of letters.

CiaCia tribe applause scientific writing system of Hangeul and add it is very easy to read and write. At first they learn Hangeul by square, circle, dot and line then, after understand the scientific principle that the compounding of vowels and consonants become sound, they can read and write less than after two weeks. BauBau city plan to expand Hangeul class to many schools but they have difficulties because of insufficiency of teacher and material. Fortunately institute of Hunminjeong-eum carry out various project to solve the problems.

There is, however, a worrying opinion about Koreans’ recognition about that. Seonggyungwan University professor Jeong Gwang-jin who announced the transcription system for a minority trace in Taiwan emphasized with concerned voice that Korean and Hangeul must be recognized differently at the Hunminjeong-eum institute which was held in Seoul National University. Prof. Jeon said what we exported to CiaCia tribe was Hangeul which is writing system, not Korean which conclude Korean culture. That means we should recognize rightly about the adoption that we exported a method which can help to cultivate the race’s own language and culture affluently. We should avoid wrong recognition that we exported our culture which encroaches on other’s characteristics. Such way of thinking can lead dangerous cultural imperialism which violated to variety of the world. In the vicinity of the day of Hangeul, many tv programs played the adoption big but It may be asked whether they also emphasized on reporting the real object of the exportation.
