What is true about turning over rice fields ?

" Is it a annual show for two million won or the expression of famers' imminent situation ?"

There was an event turning over the 2000 square meter of rice field at Naju in Jeonranamdo
at 28th September. The two tracter under the slogan of the guarantee of the rice price swiftly
turned over 2000 square meter of rice field ahead of harvest in the presence of one hundred
farmers and more than twenty government workers and reporters.

Also, some farmer's union demonstrated piling up rice bags in the request of the guarantee of
the rice price during harvest period in front of a headoffice of agricultural organization.
The government criticized that it is a annual show of two million won in the harvest period.
But, the farmers refuted that if they don't show their pressing deman in this way, the goverment or agricultural organization never try to listen their requirement.

Between the end of last month and the early of this month, demonstrations plowing the rice field continued throughout all over the country because 20 percents of a rice price was cut back from 50,000 won to 40,000 won.
Plowings of 2000 square meter rice field is equivalent to the money of 1,700,000 won to 2,000,000 won. However, the effect of a display tilling a rice field is even more than 2,000,000 won. They purposed that their events could make an issue to the urban people and governmentby arousing their sympathy about difficult situations from the reduction of a rice price. Some farmers plowed their rice field under the guarantee of payment for it from the farmers' association. But the event of truning over a rice field was open at even last year that has twenty percent better of rice price. They admit that it is a kind of annual event on every harvest seasons. However, if they don't keep an event, agricultral orgaization asked more discount of rice prices in buying the rice from farmers.

Farmers' union said it is a self-rescue measures while they admit it is a kind ofevent. In the middle of remarkable differences in positions between the government and farmers, there was another farmers' union that demonstrate with a different event. They made rice cakes with 144 bags of a 80 kg rice and gave it to people.
They put up a placard as "Thank you for eating their local rices" among worrying about too much demonstrations on rice prices in a rural community.

  1. I don't really understand what's going on here. I guess I get the general idea.

Could you please give me a little summary in your own words. Why is this important and why does it interest you?
