“You have different thought? Leave the TV”

The Government has suppressed the press to hold cultural hegemony.
Freedom of expression is repressed.

Kim Je-dong

Since Kim Je-dong left the ‘Star Golden Bell (KBS)’ with no reasonable reasons, some of the famous entertainers have encountered with sufferings.

Son Suk-hee

Jin Sung-ho(left) and Kim Gu-ra(right)

Son Suk-hee, a professor at Sung-Shin Woman’s University, renounced ‘100 minutes debate (MBC)’ last 22th, and Jin Sung-ho, a member of GNP, demanded publicly that Kim Gu-ra, who is famous for his blunt remark, should retire the entertainment industry. Last year, Yoon do-hyun had to leave ‘Love Letter (KBS)’ with a doubtful reason.

Broadcasting companies explain that they have no choice because of high performance fee, long-contribution and loss of dignity but few people agree with them. Experts have reported that the Government has the policy of revanche, that is, people who are against the Government could not survive. As a matter of fact, Son Suk-hee, Kim Je-dong and Kim Gu-ra have something in common that they raised questions about the Government. Kim Chang-nam, a professor at the Anglican Church University, said “the Government has ousted people who were assigned by the last Government by abusing their authority, and it has spread over the entertainment industry”

This is not just a leaving of individual entertainers but ruling cultural hegemony. Lee Sang-gil, a professor at Yonsei University, analyzed that the Government seems to think that unless they grasp cultural hegemony they would be damaged so they suppress the press.

Netizens also have expressed their opinions on portals. After 1:44 pm when Son announced his retirement, over 200 opinions appeared on board and after the denunciation of Kim Gu-ra, around 1000 writings were piled upon Agora, which is a debate place on Daum.
Hong Soung-jun said “It is weird that the masters of programs should be changed according to the Government” Lee Min-jong delivered his opinion on Jin’s formal homepage “It is audience who decide who should leave or remain not the ruling party” Many netizens mentioned that they felt like going back to the fifth Republic when all freedom of speech was prohibited.

Rosy view for the country’s employment situation

Following President Lee Myung-bak’s warning about a prematurely rosy view for the country’s employment situation, the administration yesterday announced a plan to spend 3.5 trillion won ($3.03 billion) to create up to 650,000 jobs.

“The economy is improving, but the job situation is still serious, we need toplace top priority on addressing this problem.” Lee was quoted as saying duringan emergency economic meeting by his spokeswoman, Kim Eun-hye.
"Some peopleclaim that the job market will improve in one or two years, but it is just anempty promise but a political slogan,” Lee said during a meeting with senior
economic officials.

According to Kim, the president pointed out that employment tends to be a lagging indicator. and he also sought the support of the Grand National Party to approve bills linked to deregulation to nurture the country’s service industry, linking the matter with job creation.

“The president asked the administration to look at the urgency of the issue and come up with diversified job policies. Because the ordinary citizens are still struggling, so it is premature for the government to relax,” Lee said. “We must
continue fighting the crisis by speedily spending state budgets.” she said,

Lee also said Korea’s most pressing challenge is resolving the mismatching amongst the job seekers and employers.

“We need a fundamental resolution to this problem. Like many advanced countries,a tailored vocational training system should be built by linking the academia and the industries,” Lee was quoted as saying, ordering the Education, Labor andKnowledge Economy ministries to come up with a plan as soon as possible.

He urged the governing and opposition parties to expedite government-proposed revisions that would remove or ease outdated regulations in the services industry and thereby help create more work.

The Office of the Prime Minister said the government will continue to inject money into a temporary employment program through next year to create over half a million jobs. As part of the efforts, the government will extend the deadline of the state-backed employment assistant program, which offers 100,000 jobs. The program was initially due to end at the end of this year.

Sharing Hangeul with CiaCia Tribe

In last August Hangeul was adopted as a writing system of an Indonesian tribe in the Sulawesi area, BauBau city in Buton Island. They have their own tongue but there was no system to present it so their language had been in danger to be extinct. By the adoption, however, it escape from dying tongue.

One of the American news played the adoption.

Hangeul was motivated by a ruler’s desire to help his people(Kin Sejong). Hangeul characters’ shapes are derived from the shapes of the lip, tongue and throat when they speak. It can represent each syllable which conveys the sounds of spoken words into the image of letters.

CiaCia tribe applause scientific writing system of Hangeul and add it is very easy to read and write. At first they learn Hangeul by square, circle, dot and line then, after understand the scientific principle that the compounding of vowels and consonants become sound, they can read and write less than after two weeks. BauBau city plan to expand Hangeul class to many schools but they have difficulties because of insufficiency of teacher and material. Fortunately institute of Hunminjeong-eum carry out various project to solve the problems.

There is, however, a worrying opinion about Koreans’ recognition about that. Seonggyungwan University professor Jeong Gwang-jin who announced the transcription system for a minority trace in Taiwan emphasized with concerned voice that Korean and Hangeul must be recognized differently at the Hunminjeong-eum institute which was held in Seoul National University. Prof. Jeon said what we exported to CiaCia tribe was Hangeul which is writing system, not Korean which conclude Korean culture. That means we should recognize rightly about the adoption that we exported a method which can help to cultivate the race’s own language and culture affluently. We should avoid wrong recognition that we exported our culture which encroaches on other’s characteristics. Such way of thinking can lead dangerous cultural imperialism which violated to variety of the world. In the vicinity of the day of Hangeul, many tv programs played the adoption big but It may be asked whether they also emphasized on reporting the real object of the exportation.

President Lee should show courage to face the pain we gave to Vietnam

President Lee is going to visit Vietnam on flowing October, 20th ~22nd. It will be the fifth visiting after Yungsam Kim(1997), Daejung Kim(1998), Muhyun Ro(2004.06) as the president of Korea.

Though they had Vietnam War, Korea and Vietnam have achieved rapid relation development in politic, economies and cultures since 1992 when a treaty was signed between the two countries.

There are about five hundred thousand people who came and went between two countries last year and it is up to 80,000~90,000 people who are living in the other’s country each. About 60~70 per cent of ninety thousand people in Vietnam enjoy Korean films and dramas. In addition, more than forty thousand Vietnam brides live in Korea, which show us how deep our relationship is. These two countries are going to raise up their relationship from comprehensive companion to strategic copartner by President Lee’s visiting.

This is a right direct selection for Vietnam is the center of the Association of Southeast Asia Nations. Moreover, they has a 3250km coastline which overlaps our petroleum transport routes as well as they are good patners checking the Chinese rush together.

However, something bad happened that Korea hurt Vietnamese proud right before this important summit. As the Ministry for Patriot and Veterans Affairs announced a revised bill about the honorable treatment for a man of merit of country, they described Vietnam war as an act contributed to the peace of the world. Hardly had Vietnam been repulsed by this when Myunghwan Yu, a foreign ministry , went there to make them calm down.

Pamtienvan, an ambassador of Vietnam in Korea, said “it’s true that Korea entered Vietnam War damaging to Vietnamese but they said nothing about it. If the revised bill described the war as a good one, it would make Vietnamese heart hurt again." We who are requiring Japan of penitence should listen seriously at this point of his utterance.

Strict Valuaton on Teachers Improves Quality of Education

Judy Lynn Genshaft, the preesident of American Council on Education, visited Korea to join the international universty president forum. She refered on the valuation system on teachers in America in an interview. She said every school and step of system in America are following those valuation system by law, and the result of it is linked directly with salary and promotion. Adding this, she emphasized Korea should adopt this valuation system to elevate teachers' responsibty. According to her, America is operating firm valuation system on teachers' accomplishment despite it has a systematized teacher's union. She also emphasized that improving teachers' responsiblity by this kind of evaluating system will muster teachers' competitive power and students' accomplishment both.

In my opinion, teachers shoud have competitive power because they lead the new knowledge Based socety. I believe teachers' responsibility is a decisve factor in quality of eduacation. Teachers have such a heavy responsibilty in society, so the evaluating system will be a very good device to measure performance of their duties. It goes wthout saying that quality of public education will improve. Therefore there is much room for consideration in Korea, too.

France Gives Students Cash!

There is a controversy about a new policy that may undermine the value of education.
On October, 7th, International Herald Tribune (IHT) reported that the French government announced the plan of paying cash to students who study hard.

It is an education policy attempting to increase both low attendance rate and graduation rate.
France introduced the cash incentive policy which gives up to around 10,000 euros per class.
Literally, if a student does well in school, he or she can earn money.

On October 5th, this program went into effect in three vocational schools in the areas of Paris as a trial run for future participating schools.
The students of these schools will set a goal for the average attendance rate; if they attain it, the government will award between 2,000 euros and 10,000 euros per class.

This money can be used for any purpose ranging from driving lessons to school field trips.

Michell Blanche, the representative of Paris school district, said that this support program is a “creative attempt” that violates no moral issues.

However, others disagree.

The first objection questions whether money is the proper incentive to motivate students.

Jean-Jacques Ahjang, the representative of ‘FCPE’, a left-wing parent organization, argued that this program is an abuse of the power of school administration.

Philip Beurangdo of ‘PEEP'; a conservative parent organization, said, “It is not desirable that money becomes the leverage that motivates students.”

An independent group called SOS Education, took it one step further, criticizing the program through a blog by saying that the French government is bribing students with money and is undermining the value of the French Republic.

Regardless of which side is correct, one fact remains unchanged: as the high school dropout rate rises quickly, especially in minority and low-income districts of France, the voice for reform is getting just as loud. Currently, 13% (around 15,000) of the French young are entering the workforce without high school diplomas. The riot of the young immigrants that broke out 4 years ago clearly shows the frustration that many are feeling.

Korean Does Not Exist Without Taekwondo In Games.

Korean Character in The Street Fighter 4

How Korean is depicted on game? Korean game characters have shown up on overseas games, since the Seoul Olympic. As Taekwondo has adopted as an official sport of the Olympic, proportion of Korean character taking Taekwondo has increased in games. 김갑환 who appears in FATAL FURY 2 (아랑전설2) is the first Korean character taking Taekwondo. Kicking and fantastic action of Taekwondo make fans of fighting game crazy, and make Taekwondo become the symbol of Korean characters. Most of Korean characters in games take Taekwondo like Back Dosan(백두산) in Takken, and Lee Jinju(이진주) in The King of Fighters.

Korean characters’ existence is very weak, especially wrong recognition of North Korea is a serious problem. Korea is represented as War country, and North Korean is set as bad roles. Gunplaying game, Crysis, deals with activities of American Special Forces who fights against North Korean Army. North Korean Army is described as a villain who tortures prisoners in this game. North Korea Army appears also as bad people on overseas famous games such as Rogue Warrior and HOMEFRONT. On such game, existence of South Korea is very small. South Korea is a just weak and minor nation that cares about a powerful country, even in games. Most of the games are about fight between The United States and North Korea, and all South Korea does is offering a battlefield. There is a game which is reflected wrong understanding of Korean. GTA4 which has sold millions of games describes Korean who counterfeit dollars. Korean is a villain who does not care ways and means to make big money. The main character of GTA4 has a mission to punish a counterfeit criminal in Korean Town. Yakuza 2 made by Japan is about war between Japanese criminal and Korean gang. Unlike Japanese characters are described wonderfully, Korean characters are described mean and cruel gang.

Statelessness of Korean characters is also a problem. Their appearances are similar to Chinese, and hardly ever have personality compared to Japanese. In comparison with Japanese character such as Ninja, Samurai and Karate, we cannot find identity of Korean except for Taekwondo. A game, World heroes, which was so popular in video arcade in 1980’s, transformed Bruce Lee(이소룡) into Korean, so made Korean upset. A Korean character added to The Street Fighter 4 recently is also controversial. Korean was very excited when they heard of Korean character would come out with The Street Fighter 4, which has sold 2 millions of games across the world. Unfortunately, added character has simply Korean nationality and its costumes and appearance is similar to Chinese. Its voice is also dubbed English and Japanese. Korean female shaman character’s garment on a game, Age of discovery 4, makes us bring Chinese to mind. Japanese game company is trying to have a correct understanding by adding Lee Sunshin(이순신) and Gubooksun(거북선, a ship which has shape of a turtle) in coming Age of discovery online.

“This year, we refuse to National Academic Assessment Examination.”

National Academic Assessment Examination("일제고사") is that Korea schools have examination to evaluate student’s achievements.

This examination gives rise to complication between government and many people as students, parents and teachers. Groups of parents of students and teachers will refuse to this examination and they are going to educational experience slated for October 14 ~15. So they are expected to friction with the education authority.

Yoon sook ja, policy planning chairperson, claims “students that have trouble to study are founded due to this examination but governments failed to come up with solutions.

This educational experience will be held nationwide as last year and Groups of parents of students will hold large events of culture experience in Seoul.

Last year, many teachers were severely reprimanded for their moving to refuse the examination. The teacher’s labor union have plane to support the educational experience indirectly but they will not claim this trouble directly.

The Department of Education decides that school or teacher that refuse this examination will be submitted to a disciplinary measure.

In my opinions, our education policy always debated the pros and cons and cause many complications. Now, students of our country are plunged in excessive competition of entrance examinations and they spend the day on the desk to study. In this excessive competition, we could see the word as “hell entrance examination”

I think that National Academic Assessment Examination gives stress to students because operation of this examination not for students and this examination make precedence. I hope that Education policy will concerned for students.

Prof. Ramsey said, ‘Hangeul - the most outstanding letter’

An event celebrating Hangeul Proclamation Day in Washington, D.C. … ‘Hangeul’s internationalization is a political problem’

Prof. Ramsey who give a special lecture celebrating Hangeul Proclamation Day
Robert Ramsey who is a professor in the University of Maryland gave a special lecture on the subject of ‘Why we celebrate Hangeul Proclamation Day’ in KORUS house in Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States of America on October 6, 2009.

‘Hangeul is better than any other letters in the world’. Robert Ramsey who is a professor in the University of Maryland emphasized over and over again Hangeul’s superiority and a hidden meaning of Hangeul invention, that is to say significant humanism through special lecture celebrating Hangeul Proclamation Day – ‘Why we celebrate Hangeul Proclamation Day’ in KORUS house in Embassy of the Republic of Korea in the United States of America on October 6, 2009.

A linguist Ramsey said that Hangeul is a scientific letter connecting voice and letter systematically. He valued Hangeul as great achievement not discovered any other letters and a commemorative event. He also said that Hangeul is a world alphabet and a symbol showing Korea’s high cultural level as well as a world present having important meaning being prominent in any other countries. Related to this, He explained that some consonants like ‘ㄱ’, ‘ㄴ’, ‘ㄷ’ are modeled on a vocal organ, so that they are systematically linked voice with letter but in alphabet, ‘t’ and ‘d’ have no clue to be connected with pronunciation.

He also took note of humanism showing through the Korean script made by Sejong, one of the great kings in The Joseon Dynasty of Korea, and general belief about education. He said that Sejong had a general opinion that anyone has to read and write sentences and even women must understand texts. However at that time, he said, it is bad and dangerous for the governing classes although it is deserved right now.

He was deeply interested in Hangeul’s internationalization but he indicated that it is complicated problem because it is involved in political meaning.

For example, in Jungjong of Joseon, Choi Se Jin working on a calendar made Koreans learn other languages like Manchu, Japanese, and Chinese using Hangeul’s sound system. In this situation, a possibility of Hangeul’s internationalization is big but it is political and complicated problem in reality.

He indicated political meaning of Hangeul’s internationalization saying that Hangeul is most efficient in spelling Chinese and if Hangeul were introduced in China the Chinese could have learned and written Chinese easily. However he said that the Chinese would oppose that suggestion because it is related to political reasons like a national pride. He also said that most of holidays in the world are related to political event, a change of season and religion but Hangeul Proclamation Day has a special meaning because it is a commemoration Day thinking about development of human’s mind, idea and accomplishment.

Prof. Ramsey studied Gyeongsang-do(경상도) and Hamgyeong-do(함경도) dialects in the 15th and 16th century at a Yonsei University and a graduate school of Seoul National University and lectured in the Korean language at Columbia University. He has taught the Korean language over twenty years at the University of Maryland and he is famous as holding a special ceremony annually Hangeul Proclamation Day.

Meanwhile Kwon Myung Won who is exhibiting calligraphy works celebrating Hangeul Proclamation Day showed people writing letters using a writing brush. In addition about 70 students who taking lectures about the Korean language at the University of Maryland recited Korea poems like ‘엄마야 누나야’ and ‘진달래꽃’ by Kim So Wol(김소월), ‘꽃’ by Kim Chun Su(김춘수) and ‘국화 옆에서’ by Seo Jung Ju(서정주). They are applauded by audiences.

‘I will not go to school……’

Catch Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 of immature elementary school students.

‘They hang out with friends who sneeze, and wear the masks of students that had a cold……’

A housewife ‘Park (43, Gangdong-gu, Seoul)’ heard a shocking story from her son, an elementary school student, lately. His classmates are trying all means possible to catch Influenza A virus subtype H1N1 because they do not want to go to school.

It is a very shocking story that her son told of ‘immature’ students’ actions. They hang out with friends who sneeze or have a fever, and don’t wash their hands after exercising. In addition, they wear the masks of students that had a cold.

Park sighed “A big academy takes students’ temperatures before class, and then students who have a fever are pleased saying ‘Mommy, I think I don't need to go to school.’” Besides, “As they don’t know that their parents are shocked, they acted thoughtlessly.”

In fact, it is easy to find such questions ‘How to get H1N1’, ‘How to have a fever’ etc, and writings ‘I want to be absent with H1N1.’

They wrote writing ‘I don't want to go to school, so please tell me how to get H1N1 at once or how to show similar symptoms’. Then some students told a ridiculous story ‘Stay in crowded places and then use a keyboard which is used by others for more than 2 hours and rub your nose or eat food with those hands.’

In addition, some students are having dangerous ideas, ‘There is H1N1 check in school tomorrow morning, so I need a fever of more than 37.5 degrees’ and ‘If I have to eat something, I'll purchase it whatever it may be.’

In particular, a strange story has spread out that ‘You will never catch a cold after suffering from H1N1’

It is a serious problem that some students don’t know the seriousness of the situation and have such eased attitudes such as ‘I don’t care about getting H1N1’, even though it has caused 11 deaths in Korea and has raised social anxiety about H1N1.

A middle school student ‘Youn(15, Suwon, Kyung-ki)’ said “There are many friends who want to get H1N1 because that student will take a rest about for a week” and “A class teacher checks students’ temperatures and tells students to try to wash their hands, but they don’t worry about it and even think ‘I’m not going to die.’”

Ministry of Education, Science and Technology(교육과학기술부) officials said that “I heard that there are students who want to get H1N1 intentionally, but this report has not been confirmed’ and “They cannot be absent unconditionally because of a high fever and symptoms of a cold, and have to decide on a measure of stopping to attend school after consultation with a public health teacher of the school.”

The variation of he ratio of students who go on to a university is high according to a home background

can’t estimate the level of high schools only from the ratio of students who go on to a university according to the Analysis from Korean educational develoment institute,

A recent analysis said that the ratio of students who go on to a university is largely depending on each student’s home background in the middle of the enforcement “학교 정보 공시제”, which requires every high school in Korea to open the information about the ratio of students who go on to a university to the public.

This means that it is hard to estimate each high school’s ability to teach only from the ratio of students who go on to a university. So some say that there should be a supplement for “정보 공시”

According to the report ‘ The difference of the ratio of students who go on to a university between high schools and its meaning(by Korean educational development Institute on Oct. 3rd) which analyzed the ratio of students who go on to a university of 189 high schools and 9,300 students in whole country , there was a huge difference of the ratio according to each student’s home background.

The average ratio of students who go on to a university of the surveyed students was

How to manage stress on holidays?

Coping with the stress in Chusuk

# An office worker, Jang(36), she is getting a headache because Chusuk is just around corner. Last year, she was afraid of her relatives so she did not go anywhere in Chusuk. They always asked her that when she married. Nowadays, she is more sensitive.

# A housewife Yoon(44), She always fears that holiday is coming. When her relatives gather together, at first, they are very harmonious and happy. However, its atmosphere is getting serious. Finally they are arguing each other. Her son said, “Why do our relatives always have a quarrel?”.

On holidays, many people go to see their family or relatives. However, unfortunately, they are not good always. Sometimes, they are making a row. If its situation is happening again and again, their unique family affection(가족애) disappears. However, we don’t want to happen to that. In that case, how to handle our anger?

◆ We have something to do with each other, so we are fighting more.

The reason why we are fighting each other is that we are family. It is related to our brain. The renowned scholar Stephen Platek in America said that brain reaction is different depends on who they are. If we look at our family pictures and others pictures, reaction parts in brain are dissimilar. Our brain shows the same reaction when we are looking at our pictures and family pictures. However, when we are looking at others pictures, other parts in brain are responding. In other words, we recognize that family or relatives is the same with us. So relatives more trust each other than others, and we accept the same remark differently.
Therefore, one of your relatives said that “you should marry.” or “Why did not you get promotion?”, you are responding to a question sensitively. We think that relatives and we are the same. (I=relatives)

◆ We are patient, because of mother. It does not make sense, nowadays.

Professor Kim in Kyung Hee University said that some people think that she/he is the weak and then they can easily get angry to her/him who accepts their anger naturally. Therefore they choose their family or relatives. So it is liable to fighting on holidays. Children and husbands usually work off their stress to their mother or wives. In this case, women who are under great pressure, can lose their temper when they are working on Holidays. He said that in the past women are always patient because they are mother or wives, but nowadays they don’t bear it any longer. Therefore, after holidays gathering, we have a specific time that we can talk each other. In addition, husbands do not force their wives to be tolerant, and they should get a coffee for their wives or help them. Someone who is much afraid of holidays, she/he makes a plan how to deal with situation.

◆ Write a diary about your anger.

Professor Kim in Kyung Hee University said, “Our activity reduces in autumn and winter. This period is related to college entrance exam and something productive. So our stress is getting more aggravated, we might come down with melancholia. In addition, in autumn, we are more annoyed and easily losing our temper. So we are careful each other. "
So he suggests that we should write a diary about our anger. We can understand our problems and we can find a solution by writing a dairy. In addition, we unwittingly know that we are easily getting stressed about something which is very trivial and worthless. Therefore he thinks that we can control our stress by managing our anger, trying meditating in subway or bus, listening to favorite music.

Comments
Sometimes, upcoming holiday is so stressful. When I was preparing for entrance exam, I didn’t want to see my relatives, because I didn’t want to hear about exam. That year, I might be melancholy. However, I think it is unavoidable situations, so we cannot help hearing something which is good or bad. So, like this article, we have to manage our stress and try to overcome these conditions.
Many people are too busy so they can’t meet easily. In particular, we rarely see our relatives except for specific days or meeting. In this point, Chusuk or other holidays are important. Therefore, we should considerate each other and have a good time with our relatives.
