With the kimchi making season ahead, many are alarmed about kimchi imported from China. "The scandal of the taste",the food program of JTBC channel focuses on analyzing the realities of kimchi imported from China on 17th.
China suffered from "formalin effect" last summer. Since Chinese farmers did not posses cold storages to preserve the lettuce they harvested, they use formalin to preserve and circulate lettuce. Such method of preservation has already been adopted for the past three to four years.
Formalin is a liquid solution of formaldehyde. This is first class cancer causing substance which can cause the "new house syndrome". Formalin is regulated by the ministry of food and drugs due to its toxicity. Therefore, it is not assumed be to contained in any domestic food. As a result, any examination or standard to detect formalin within agricultural products is not implemented.
However, it is difficult for Korean housewives to stick to domestic agricultural products due to the increased prices of them. The prices of radish and lettuce has been increased more than two folds compared to those of the regular harvesting period. Also, it is not easy living without imported goods. Under such circumstance, the fear that formalin used lettuce reminds people of the nightmare that imported chinese ingredients caused including "lead kimchi", and "parasite kimchi".
The reporters of "the scandal of taste" visited Shandong province of China. The testimony of farmers and workers at the processing factory was totally shocking. According their statements, Chinese kimchi needs a comprehensive sanitary management immediately. Futhermore, Korean kimchi has been found to have a flaw.
