A customer who randomly bought kimchi which happened to contain cancer-causing substance.

With the kimchi making season ahead, many are alarmed about kimchi imported from China. "The scandal of the taste",the food program of JTBC channel focuses on analyzing the realities of kimchi imported from China on 17th.

China suffered from "formalin effect" last summer. Since Chinese farmers did not posses cold storages to preserve the lettuce they harvested, they use formalin to preserve and circulate lettuce. Such method of preservation has already been adopted for the past three to four years.

Formalin is a liquid solution of formaldehyde. This is first class cancer causing substance which can cause the "new house syndrome". Formalin is regulated by the ministry of food and drugs due to its toxicity. Therefore, it is not assumed be to contained in any domestic food. As a result, any examination or standard to detect formalin within agricultural products is not implemented.

However, it is difficult for Korean housewives to stick to domestic agricultural products due to the increased prices of them. The prices of radish and lettuce has been increased more than two folds compared to those of the regular harvesting period. Also, it is not easy living without imported goods. Under such circumstance, the fear that formalin used lettuce reminds people of the nightmare that imported chinese ingredients caused including "lead kimchi", and "parasite kimchi".

The reporters of "the scandal of taste" visited Shandong province of China. The testimony of farmers and workers at the processing factory was totally shocking. According their statements, Chinese kimchi needs a comprehensive sanitary management immediately. Futhermore, Korean kimchi has been found to have a flaw.

<The scandal of taste> which focus on korean food was broadcasted on Saturday, 17 23:00.

One out of four high school male seniors smoke now ... Stop smoking success rate is less than 5%.

Korea youth smoking rate was 12.1% last year. One out of eight youths smoke now. Because cigarettes can be easily and cheaply accessible, there is such a high youth smoking rate.

This is the result of last year the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey of Korean youth. Nearly half of the youth who had tried smoking, 50.4% response was, "I buy direct cigarettes." and the five people in four people (81%) replied "Directly buying cigarettes was not difficult.".

Korea compared to other countries, cigarettes are cheaper too. Department of Health and Human Services Health Promotion Director Bae Geum Ju said "The most obvious youth stop smoking policy is warning photos or stop smoking education and raising the price.".

If price of cigarettes rises, youth access to tobacco is difficult. Because adolescents compared to adults do not have much money. Actually 'Youth stop-smoking campaigns’ in the United States, according to a survey, whenever 10 percent hike in the price of cigarettes, adult smoking rate is 5%, and youth smoking rate is 7% fell.

Welfare promoted increase in the price of cigarettes while they notified smoking graphic warning on cigarette packs more than half last September to make amendments to the National Health Promotion. Welfare Im Jong Gyu health policy director said "Cigarettes price impression is desperately needed in the situation of third year of high school boys smoking by 25% and the third year of high school girls smoking by 8.1%". The ministry official "the price of cigarettes in order to reduce youth smoking rates would have to rise to more than double the amount of current (5000 won)." said.

Youth smoking once started is difficult to stop smoking. Because As early start smoking, nicotine addiction is more serious.

The Korean Association of Stop Smoking and Health Chairman, Seo Hong Gwan said “Youths started smoking cigarettes have only 1-5% of non-smoking success before they grow to adults. So smoking prevention policy is very important.”

On the other hand, the world's largest international conference The World Health Organization (WHO) Tobacco Control Framework Convention on (FCTC) 5th Conference of the Parties with cigarettes problem will take place in Seoul from the 12th.

November Screenings Disclose Korean Truths

Three movies talking about South Korea’s ‘uncomfortable truth’ are becoming a matter of great interest by coming to the theater district in November.
‘Don’t Cry Mommy’ criticizes the slap on the wrist punishment to people who attack minors. ‘I’m the Murderer’ tells us about the contradiction in the current legal system, and ‘Namyoung-Dong 1985’ reminds us of the human rights. These three movies are the agonists.
‘Don’t Cry Mommy’ is a movie about the story of a mother who lost her only daughter, she got personal revenge instead of using the law. Domestic teen sex offenders crimes were the topic of this movie.
For the first time in a Korean movie, it focused on the reality of teen sex offenders and criticizes how this social condition has no strict laws.
‘Don’t Cry Mommy’ shows the victim picking an extreme choice in suicide because of sexual assault which also caused her family to suffer in all their lives. This draws the public rage by giving contrast to the perpetrator who lives a relaxed life even though he committed a crime. It releases on November 22nd.
‘I’m the Murderer’ is now high ranked in the box office and this movie also criticizes a bitter reality. This is about the fight between a serial killer who became a star by publishing his murder penitential biography and a cop who tries to discover the unsolved disappearance. It overlaps with the anecdote of Sagawa Itsay who still is a famous writer after publishing a book about murdering a Dutch female college student, this gives audiences a shock. Also, the movie features the story of a murderer who asks forgiveness after a statute of limitations and he gets a lot of fame. This story attracts a large crowd by reporting a contradiction in the judicial system.
‘Namyoung-Dong 1985’ tells us what happened in an anti-communist investigative room in Namyoung-dong for 22days according to the essay of a senior advisor of Minjutonghapdang, Kim Geontae, who has died, giving us a question of human rights.
For 22days, the spectacle of having a main character locked in a room and tortured until being placed in extreme danger of losing his life, lets us reflect on ourselves who were ignorant of human rights and consider the right direction for advancement. It releases on 22nd of November..

If a guide dog had been there …

There was disconsolate news about a severely disabled person (Ju yung Kim) died because of a big fire. All she needed was to move five steps forward to go to a front door. What could bridge the divide between the front door and five steps? Whether the severely disabled recieve supporting activity can be a matter of life and death. What if she had a guide dog? Would the dog pull her wheelchair only as five steps or bark a lot for letting neighbors know what is happening without waiting 911

There are dogs for helping the blind, the deaf and crippled people. The dogs are very helpful for crippled people to have their ordinary life. In the morning, a guide dog can wake up its owner, bring things what the owner want, unload a washing machine, open and close doors and turn on and off the light. If their owner comes off the wheel chair, they will bark a lot to ask other’s help. I interviewed one of crippled people who has a guide dog. He said “This is what life is all about!”

The dog can be a psychological support for the disabled. In Korea, many disabled people do not go out well so the dogs can help to keep them from loneliness and isolation. It also improves their social interaction. A study has shown that Non-disabled people greeted a disabled person only one time when the disabled person shopped for groceries but It increased by 8 times when the person was together with a guide dog. The presence of the dog itself let down the bars between the disabled and Non-disabled. Besides, the dogs with full of happiness makes their owner feel better.

However, It is still a slow rate of progress about the foster project of guide dogs. There are Korean Society for habilitation of persons with Disabilities and Samsung guide dog center, but Samsung downsized its business 2 years ago. There are only one hundred guide dogs now. It is shameful when we compare it to twenty-five thousand dogs in the world. As for England, the disabled adopted more than twenty thousand guide dogs in England Royal Society for the Guide Dog. In Germany, the government intervene in the business. The business should be managed by nonprofit organizations and supported by government, not by private enterprises.

The disabled who I met for interview hesitated to live with a guide dog at the very first. They said, It sounded difficult to live with it, and they had a hard time of taking a bus or entering a company together with it. A guide dog was banned for entering the National Assembly building in Korea. However, It is not a big problem as much as discrimination about the disabled. A blind man said he was walking alone outside, mistakenly brushed up against a woman, and suddenly she screamed so loudly. He decided to adopt a guide dog. After that, he felt he received special treatment.

“These day children do not touch guide dogs because they learned information (‘do not touch guide dog’) However, I heard a woman explained her son about my dog. She said, ‘The dog is for a poor person who cannot see.’ The woman had respect only for my guide dog, not for me.”

Ju yung Kim shows we still have a long way to go to prejudiceless and unsegregated world. I hope the guide dogs be an assistant for the long way. We pray for the bliss of dead.

Korean Movies Find New Recipe for Success

Korean films are enjoying a banner year at the domestic box office this year thanks to their success in attracting audiences that skew more toward their 30s and 40s than their 20s.

During the first half of 2012 Korean domestic films sold 44.17 million movie tickets, 34.6% more than the same period of 2011 and breaking the record of 41.48 million set in the first half of 2006. Eighteen Korean movies have already sold over a million tickets each, compared with 16 during the same period of 2011 and 13 in 2010.

The main reason for the growing success of Korean films appears to be their appeal to audiences older than the traditional target audience of people in their 20s. The Thieves, one of the year’s blockbusters, got 71% of its audience from people in their 30s and 40s and only 26% from those in their 20s, according to data from Maxmovie, Korea’s top movie site. Another box office hit is Architecture 101 which got only 24% of its audience from people in their 20s versus 45% in their 30s and 28% in their 40s. For All About My Wife, 45% were in their 30s.

The tastes of Korean moviegoers have evolved over the past decade. Whereas comedies or action movies drew the biggest crowds, now audiences are equally drawn to genres like romantic comedies and melodramas once considered niche films. All About My Wife and Architecture 101 each sold over four millions tickets so far this year. Unbowed, based on an actual court case, sold 3.42 million tickets.

As this year’s biggest domestic hits have shown, Korean audiences are now drawn less to plot and action and more to characters, especially if they are played by popular actors. And films with several stars in character roles are proving to be increasingly popular, like The Thieves and Grand Heist.

As Korean filmmakers see more success with mature themes, they have begun raising their target age from teens and young adults to a broad-based audience centered around those in their 30s. This shift has tended to boost the quality of Korean films, helping them compete more effectively against Hollywood imports which are still aimed mostly at youthful audiences.

Cramming Arabic to pass College Scholastic Ability Test

About 36,000 students applying for College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) chose Arabic as a second language subject even though only three high schools taught students Arabic.

A significant number of Korean high school students in the third grade were studying Arabic harder than other major subjects such as Korean, English and mathematics. Some were learning from Arabic tutors who major Arabic and their parents were paying a lot of money for them. In 2004, only 531 students  had chose Arabic as a second language subject. This year, the number sharply increased by 35469. Even though only three high schools taught students Arabic, 40% of students applying for College Scholastic Ability Test(CSAT) choosed Arabic as a second language subject for some reasons.
First, everyone could start from the same line from the bottom. According to cramming schools offering special Arabic course, most students could not get high score in Chinese and Japanese due to the great number of other students who had lived in the countries. They added it is easy to get better score in Arabic because no one has lived in Arabic speaking countries.
Second, students could get higher score in Arabic than other minor subject in short period. Although there were only 3 high schools across the country teaching students Arabic, the average score in Arabic was much higher than other minor subject last year. It was 80 compared to  Japanese's score, 66. This means most students learned Arabic in private institute or tutors during short time.
A number of students choosing Arabic as one of subjects to enter university skyrocketed because all of the students could prepare the exam at same starting line and get high score in relatively short time by learning in private institutions.  Some experts argued that students should learn Arabic in school curriculum that is well organized not in cramming schools in order to develop Arabic language skills.

"In Korea, mental agony is prevailed.... 'mental illness hospitalization' must be changed"

OECD released the report about the mental health of Korea

OECD(Organization for Economic cooperation and Development) proposed the necessity  of measurement to the prevalence of mindful agony in korea society on November 8th.

Before 'The Korea, Chinese and Japan Mental Health Policy Forum' which was held in Hotel Silla. Dr. Susan Oconer, the consultant of the OECD, shows the whole mental health system of korea then gave the advice lists.

OECD diagnosed the prevalence of mental agony in the korea society, listing the issues about the World best suicide rate, Alchol  abusing, Gambling, Internet addiction and School violence which were the hot potatoes of korea.

Moreover, pointing out the realities about the high rate of long term hospitalization in hospital and institution, OECD said about the necessity of the local community centered-clinic system.  It was the result from the high rate of long term inpatient in the mental recuperation center and the high portion of involuntary inpatient rate.

However, Dr. Oconer emphasized that the long term hospitalization is inefficient and expensive.
In connenction with this, OECD proposed the reform of the social security system which is not appropriate to the management of local community patients. Then they demanded about the building of environment that the autonomy decision of patient comes first. They were suggested as the main policy for the improvement of mental clinic system.

Dr. Oconer explained the local community centered clinic as the high-level accessibility method which can be applied to the Office, Home and External Examination.

She said "Mental agony is affected by various factors like economical and social effect. However, these simple mental disorders don't be cured properly in medical perspective." Then she ordered the expansion of the accessibility to the psychological health service and the solution to the prejudice of mental disease.

Especially, OECD paid attention to the role of  'Ministry of Health and Welfare' with suggestion about the importance of leadership which is organizing the separated mental cure services. This suggestion was the outcome of awareness that we don't systematize the existing program and the lack of investment to the mental health system. In the same vein, OECD evaluated our Health, House, Employ and Social Cure Plan as insufficient things in their report.

Dr. Oconer said, "Mental health problem is not only about the medical problem but also the problem of whole area. So we need the remedy for the all-round part."

The realted-person of Ministry of Welfare and Helath announced the establishment of National Mental Health Institute for the supply of systematic mental health service and the manpower. Then he emphasized that "For the countermeasure to the increasing metal problem demand like addiction and suicide, We will enlarge the Mental Health Infrastructure and expand the Local Community-Centered Mental Health Enhancement Buisness." Did Candidate Park ever get married, or have a baby?

There has been a controversy about Professor Hwang of Yonsei University saying that “It is hard to say that Park, a presidential candidate of Senuri Party, carried out a role as a woman because she has not gotten married, given birth to a child, or raised one.”

Professor Hwang was on Channel A, which is a current affairs TV shows, as a guest and stated that “The difference between man and woman in Korea is not the distinction of genital organs but the distinction of role.” He also added that “The representative role of a Korean woman is bearing children and raise them after getting married.” These statements occurred during the explanation of the comment made by Jinae Kim, a former member of a legislative assembly. Kim remarked on twitter that “I feel insulted as a woman” about Park’s female president argument.

Professor Hwang first premised that “You have to consider that this comment is from the opposition party,” and threw a question that “Did the candidate Park get married or give a birth?” He continued to say that “Why on earth does she talk about a ‘woman’ all of a sudden, when she wants to be a president as a queen?” “Women are discriminated after their marriage and during social activity, and that’s the foolish males’ fault,” he stated this to intend that it is not easy to talk about discrimination against women when it comes to women who did not get married.

This kind of announcement of Hwang has become a target of strong criticism by the reason of degradation of women on the online board as well as SNS (Social network service). This is because it can mean that women without pregnancy, labor, and infant care cannot assert their rights. On twitter, a twit by someone against professor Hwang, saying that “According to what Mr. Hwang says, does the fact that women like Mother Teresa, Sunduk queen of Shilla, Joan of Ark of France did not have a child or get married mean that they are only female by their genital organs?” is spreading. Twit user whose ID is ‘ga*****’ mentioned that ““In that sense, every unmarried male is only men by their genital organs and every unmarried female is only women by their genital organs?” criticizing Mr. Hwang’s opinion. Junggyun Jin, a professor of Dongyang University, twitted that, “I managed to understand what Mr. Hwang said about Yunna Kim the other day, but this time, it is insane of him to say that. It is a pity.”

On the other side, there are some public opinions that people have to focus on what Mr. Hwang intended to say. They are claiming that he was pointing out the candidate Park’s unrealistic argument of female president, just in a tough way.” The argument has criticized because Park has not lived a life that embraces the weak including women.

One of the users who has an ID ‘to*************’ mentioned that “The announcement of Mr. Hwang indicates a problem about the difference between ‘gender’ and ‘sex’, and that born with a womb is not necessary condition nor a sufficient condition to learn a social role of maternal instinct. He continued to say that “Park’s lack of communication is very similar to patriarchal politic of Junghee Park, the famous dictator of Korea in 1970s and also candidate Park’s father.

A writer, Jongsuk Go mentioned on twitter that “The reason why the Senuri is heated is not because Mr. Hwang is too ignorant to put a wrong standard to define femininity, but because he is too ignorant to put a word ‘genital organ’ to Park. I cannot think of a word to substitute, though.”

Although there are opinions that defend Mr. Hwang’s announcement, there is still a criticism that it is just inappropriate itself. Jungran Kim, a professor of Sangji University mentioned on twitter that “I am against Park more than anyone and I am also against Park’s female president argument. However, I do not agree with the low-grade announcement of Mr. Hwang. It is obviously belittlement of women and deserves criticism.”

About this controversy, Mr. Hwang said on the interview with Dong-a Ilbo that “Academically, we distinct sex and gender. I choose the word ‘genital organ’ because the word sex might cause an aversion to people in public.” He also explained that “I wanted to mean that when we discuss a woman living in Korea, it is the role that decides the nature of female, not the genital organ.” Finally, he clarified that he will explain what he intended to say on this Wednesday.

As s cultural space which co-parenting children ... Library is a small town

On last 29th, in a children library, ‘Mom reading book, Kids reading book’ which is located in Haengdang Seongdong-gu, Seoul, children are reading a book that they picked individually while sitting or lying comfortably. Reporter Bong Kyu Kim bong9@hani.co.kr

A small library

(The first part) Mom reading book, Kids reading book

Building a small library is fashion. Small library began to emerge across the country since the late 1990s to solve childcare and education problems and to make community culture. A small library does not mean only simply small-scale library but also a base of a village community and a cultural space that residents can participate in.

Central and local governments have been moving briskly to create a small library as well as a private organization. On the last July, the mayor of Seoul, Won Soon Park announced that he would establish about 500 small libraries and city libraries by 2030. Last month, even in the Seoul citizen participation budget system which was the first time, it organized 2.832 billion Won for 6 small library projects in five autonomous regions including Kangbuk • Nowon-gu.

We will inspect various looks of small libraries which have been doing noticeable activities through 3 times.

Mother Goose • Witch soup • Beetles..

Moving away from the center of reading, loan, and returning place

Accomplishing a civilian community fitting in with the books

A small library is one of the cultural movements.

30s and 40s dozens of women gathered at a two-story building in Haengdang Seongdong-gu, Seoul on 29th in the morning. Each of them is a president of an organization. They are present of Mother Goose, Witch soup, and crayon. Like their names, their common business goal of the organizations seems unfamiliar. ‘A neighbor community nurtures children together like our tradition, Pumatyi’. A small sign is attached at the entrance to the building. ‘Mom reading book, Kids reading book’. This is a small library which was built by a director, So Hee Kim (45) in 2001 at her own expense. That day the women mainly discussed coming winter vacation program for children. For several years, the director Kim has done children's Humanities • science courses every day from 10 am to 12 noon during school holidays with college student volunteers. However there is an opinion that we should make children play and sleep more, so she said she decided to change the curriculum drastically. During the meeting, sometime the presidents were laughing or not and they became serious or not because they are the mothers of the libraries.

In fact, this library is the father of libraries which recently have been built competitively in each borough. The director Kim who had been told scolding such as ‘You make a library?’, ‘How scale is it?’ ‘How many librarians are working for it? ‘said that she was not in a good emotional state about this recent trend. Autonomous community only thinks a small library as the size of it. They consider it as a project that they can do themselves proud easily without a lot of money. However, when we compare it with a big library which is focus on reading, loan, and returning place, a small library coordinates with books and makes a civilian community and is name which is coming from one cultural movement which changes a local society.

Mother Goose and Witch soup which was made by moms who considered their children’s Pumatyi education are six or seven families’ community. There are 15 small groups and they play the part of a molecules in each regional village community. ‘Beetles’ is a meeting for a Saturday-off program according to the five-day school week in 2002. Children who were first grade of elementary school at that time now become high school senior in this year. Biweekly Saturday-off plan grew bigger to the Baekdusan travel which was planned by the whole family for a half of year. Mother Goose which was made by kindergarten moms who worried about private English education has been existed for 10 years. Witch soup in which 7-year-old children and mothers made a video picture book twice a year has been existed for 11 years. As the child grew, the sight of parents, the range of the community activities has been broadened. A small group, 'Dahami' became a local volunteer group.

A library, ‘Mom reading book, Kids reading book’ is used by about 900 families. And there are about 300 sponsoring families who can borrow the books while donating 5000 ~ 10,000 Won per month. The library is the small village.

Seoul Metropolitan Government counted the total number of small library to 764 and in this year new 16 places has been built more for six months. Past Saemaeul Books, Book Cafe, libraries according to Library of Law 33 ~ 263 ㎡ are included. Seoul Metropolitan Government said that they will use the book cafes as a base space of the village community so they used the small library budget, 25 billion Won which was made up as one of the village community projects for building many book cafes. The director Kim said that it is hard to make a change by remodeling Saemaeul Books to a book café or a small library and she said the most important thing is not the number of it but the change of operators or mind.

Bands of women's society and high school students are formed in the country

"It has been 10 years since I moved here. I was awarded by the Town Office and County Office this spring and autumn for my work throughout those years. More over, I received it as an award for my contribution to regional development. The thought of culture as the power of regional development and the help for our town makes me very proud." said by Lee Sun-chul, founder of the Potato Blossom Studio Center. Although he received many honors as minister, it is a little bit different to be awarded as a resident in the county.

The Potato Blossom Studio Center is a center for cultural activities transformed by an old school. It has emerged as the premier place in the region where locals can enjoy playing samulnori, traditional Korean percussion music, and watch performances by local and national celebrities. Some famous singers also made their shows there and companies have visited the site to learn from the community and replicate the project.

“Before the school was closed in 1999, it was the elementary school every resident here went to. If I carried on other project in this place, people would have felt a sense of loss. At first locals were very curious and wary about what I was going to do with the school and afraid the young man would do something bad." the cultural director says.

As a native Seoulite, this deteriorating physical condition made him decided to move to the countryside in Gangwon in 2002. “It’s not something I am proud of saying - my weight once reached around 110 kilograms [242 pounds] from drinking and eating too much meat. I got cerebral infarction when singer Lee Seung-hwan was on a nationwide show." Lee worked as a planning director for the Kim Duk-soo Samulnori Team for 10 years, and also directed concerts for renowned vocalist Lee Seung-hwan and a rock group Jawoorim. Precociously he changed his life style due to his ill health. “During my first year here, I lost over 30 kilograms thanks to a vegetarian diet and hiking.”

The change of his body does not change his passion of cultural events. He earned funds from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to buy musical instruments and invite musical lecturers to teach elementary school and middle school students about Korean traditional music. He even formed a band called the Daeil Band composed of high school students. “I did not expect to teach the music to high school students as they are busy studying for college, but we got support from teachers. The active musical experience among students prompted adult residents to participate in musical activities, too."

Local government responded the project. The Pyeongchang County Office purchased an abandoned school and granted Lee the rights to renovate the building in 2004. The 46-year-old asked Prof. Lee Jong-ho of the Korean National University of Arts to help with the project. "Even it is a countryside, I want to make it more fashionable. But I remain the spirit of the town as school instead."

Changing the old space into culture center is also the subject of his thesis written in his studying days in England. With the major of arts management, he becomes a professsor in Yong In University. He now carry on the project base on his experience in traditional markets in Gangneung and Chuncheon. "It did not started with a good chance. To me, it is a desperate attempt. But looking back on these days, I found that everything started with a reason. To those who plan to return to the countryside, I recommend they bring with them the expertise they have to make contributions to local communities."

Is it at a disadvantage for Obama?

Hurricane'sandy' makes hard to predict upcoming result of america presidental vote.

Obama visited a site of disaster stopping election campaign to reinforce image of disaster commander until Oct,30th. He will resume campaign in Wisconsin, Nevada, Colorado. Romney, whereas, began the campaign at competition state.

Each camp is trying to predict the effect which 'sandy' will brings to the election and preparing the strategy.

According to a investigation agency, Delaware, Maryland, Conneticut including New york, New Jersey where are favorable voting constituency for Obama and are harmed by hurricane  may decrease number of people to visit the polling place. In this case, Obama   will make a loss of the whole vote.

Some say that it should be postponed the day of vote cause of hurricane, but, most think that it is unrealistic. There is some realistic suggestion that the polling hours is extended by judgement of their own governor. However, that suggestion is still tough because it may bring confusion.
