On November 6th, 2009 doctors at Chung Ang university hospital seemed so tired and serious. Even though they have slept badly for a week due to increasing Swine flu patients, they did not show sour looks at all. The reason is to be sure to win the war on Swine flu.

Kim Ju-wan, an internist at the hospital, says, “ I am getting married very soon, but I am too busy to send invitation cards.” And, as soon as she received a call through her beeper, she left without even finishing dinner. The call was also about another Swine flu patient.

As the number of Swine flu patients has become around 10,000, medical workers are undergoing terrible hardships. Even before the consultation hours, at 8:30 a.m., they are busy preparing necessary supplies.

As the hospital opened, tens of people rushed into the emergency room. Some of them even had quarrels due to the crowdedness. Oh Jung-hi, 51, a manager at the customer center, says, “It is too hard to deal with the patients who ignore rules and stubbornly demand medicine” In contrast, some people complained about the medicine, Tamiflu, saying that they have suffered from vomiting and diarrhea.

Finally, the crowded hospital became more or less quiet at 5 p.m. One of the doctors at the emergency department has warned that many patients are too obsessed with fear of Swine flu. He said, “ Some people just come to the hospital when they do not even have any minor symptoms. With hundreds of patients a day, doctors cannot concentrate on serious cases.” People will need to consider their symptoms carefully before going to a hospital.

Some of North Korean defectors in a recent survey said that they had been an object of medical experiment on a living body. According to KDI(Korea Development Institute), Marcus Noland who is belonged to the America Peterson Institute presented the survey result recently while he published "the oppression and punishment that North Korea defector had experienced in North Korea" as a subject on KDI seminar. This result was made out by the people who escaped from North Korea that composed 1,346 people who live in China and 300 people who live in South Korea since 2004 to 2008.

92.1% of them pointed out that because of the policy of North Korea, the country's economic situation is getting increasingly worse. Especially 87.3% of them answered that they had thought that North Korea must be unified with South Korea when they had lived in their home country.
30% of them who live in China and 33% who live in South Korea spoke that they had lost their family in the period of great famine and 43%of defectors who live in China and 56% who in South Korea replied that majority number of people don’t know about the food-aid shipments to North Korea and they guessed that just very few of them are aided by that.

English Man Who Has Loved Korean Traditional House For 20 Years Sadly Lost His Sight

Choi, a wife of kilburn who is a keeper of Bukchon, is telling a story that happened while she was caring and preserving Korean traditionl house at the floor of Korean verandah of Gahoidong, Jongno-Gu, Seoul.


Gahoi-Dong 31-79, Jongno-Gu, Seoul. There is a cozy Korean traditional house which English David Kilburn(66) and Korean Choi Keumok(최금옥) have lived for more than 20 years in the middle of Bukchon Korean traditional house village(북촌한옥마을).

Kilburn came to Korea in 1988, 20 years ago, and was fascinated by this house at the first sight. His wife Choi said “He bought this house as if he had bought a chocolate” and “David has loved spirit of Bukchon(북촌) and Korean traditional house itself where has remained 600 years history of Joseon(조선) and has survived through adversity of Korean modern history” He volunteered as a keeper of Korean traditional house. He used to write in Japanese magazine to advertise Korean traditional house. He also wrote an advertising writing in English in his blog. He invited foreign guests to show them beauty of Korean traditional house. He had centered Korean traditional house and Korean traditional culture in his daily life, coming and going from Seoul to Japan as a freelancer reporter and a marketing consultant.

In 2002, however, as ‘A master plan for caring Bukchon’ enforced, Kilburn and Choi’s life had entirely changed. Once developers started to buy houses, housing prices went up sharply. They also started to remodel Korean traditional house into fake one. Houses that 1st floor was built by concrete, and put a roofling tile on only 2nd floor to use commercially had came being. Now, roofs of Korean traditional house in Bukchon village can't breathe, due to dig in the ground and pour concrete instead of soil under roofing tile. Current Bukchon Village has became ‘Ghost Village’, because there was no resident. We can’t smell make rice at night.

Kilburn couldn’t stand anymore that Bukchon was getting destroyed. He met staff of Seoul and Jongno-Gu and claimed that we should set up a standard for Korean traditional house and make a regulation of extension and remodeling of a building to preserve a original form.

In 2005, he sued Seoul mayor who permitted to build illegally, but he lost suit. Seoul just suggested Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affais make new law. Still, there is no provision to preserve Korean traditional house.

It reported that he like to say “English Government visits and invests old houses which has been more than 100-200 years, and when people want to remove, change and exten it, they will be punished if they observe the rules.”

Kilburn and Choi met misfortune. In February 2006, a poclain came into front house. While he was trying to take pictures of that cruel situation, a developer pushed him and then he fell down. He was given diagnosis of a cardioplegia, and lost his sight after 10 months later.

Last year, it has been 2 years since Kilburn lost his sight, his wife Choi was given diagnosis of an uterine cervical cancer. Choi said “It may be stubborn, we felt sorry that Korean traditional house disappeared, so we tried to hold back it, but we only got diseases.”, and “It is a nation without awareness of tradition and respect for human rights.”

As story of Kilburn and Choi is known to netizens, the number of daily vistors of his blog, Gahoidong.com,(www.kahoidong.com) become over 200. He currently stays in Japan to a medical treatment. When he heard this news, his eye became moisten. Kilburn who can’t see loved Korean traditional house anymore said “ I’m happy because people pay attension to Korean traditional house that nobody cares in the past.”

Taeglish

Learning a foreign language often involves a lot of boring memorization and verb conjugation, except in South Korea where flying punches and killer kicks are part of the curriculum.

More than 40 academies nationwide teach what is known as "Taeglish," where Korean children are trained in Taekwondo by English-speaking instructors who say the martial art gives the students confidence in the language.

South Koreans spend billions of dollars a year on English instruction for their children. The language is seen as a must for entry into a good university and a good job.

"After English is combined with Taekwondo practice, children can have fun learning the language and do it in high spirits," said Kim Sung-han, the founder of Taeglish.

Taeglish, a combination of the words Taekwondo and English, was introduced in March 2007 as an activity offered by a department store for children. In about a year, academies had spread throughout the country.

Taeglish students are far more energetic in the classroom than their peers who study through traditional methods but their language skills are often not as good as their peers.

A recent study shows that marriage between an older husband and a younger wife is more harmonious than that of a younger husband and an older wife.
It says that if the man is at least 5 years older than the woman, the marriage is more likely to succeed.
The research, which was published in the European Journal of Operational Research, initially interviewed 1,500 couples (either married or in serious relationships) and then after 5 years, interviewed 1,000 of the couples again.

According to the report, the divorce rate was up to three times higher for marriages in which the woman was 5 years older than the man.
On the other hand, in cases where men were 5 years older than women, the marriages showed lower divorce rates.
Interestingly, the result also showed that marriage was more successful if the woman had a higher level of literacy than the husband.

The research singled out Beyounce and Jay-z, both pop-music artists, as the ideal couple.

A serial killer who rapes many ladies and leaves dead bodies in his house is arrested

Eat food of the season.

Drink water frequently.

We would better have a habit which is drinking water slowly and little by little. Drinking 2 liter water per one day, it is promoting body metabolism. In addition quantity of our urine is increasing, so poisonous substance in our body is excreted quickly. However we should not drink water during and after the meal, because it is not helpful to digest food.


Sleep on time.

A sound sleeping is important. While we are sleeping, parasympathetic nerves is activated, so our body tension is decreased. In addition, after the meal, sleeping for a while is good. Sleeping on time is good for our body’s rest and hormone secretion.
When we catch a cold, we are easily tired and we want to sleep because of parasympathetic nerves action. Therefore at least 5 minutes, take a rest. It is good for increasing and enforcing our immunity.

Al Gore, ex-vice president of United States makes a speech at the opening ceremony of ‘the 3rd International Conference on Green Purchasing’ that is held at gyeonggi arts center on October 21.

“We can help the earth’s crisis according to how to purchase goods.” Al Gore who is active as ecoactivist and was ex-vice president attended International Conference on Green Purchasing. He gave his opinion saying “Now changes thinking about the earth’s environment.”

Now three Japanese car enterprises, Toyota Motor, Honda, and Nissan have set to line up between the general public and high-ranking vehicle in the domestic market. Honda that minimized new car's display in the second half of the year due to economic slump and Nissan are planning to introduce new cars next year. All the parties concerned with imported cars said, "Japanese cars passed 40 percents of monthly market share in imported cars at first time after Honda's popularity in last June. As soon as line-up of each enterprise is complete, an annual share will be possible to 40 percents."

Perfect Food? Don’t too trust milk.

Doctors recommend three cups of milk to prevent osteoporosis. Experts advise women that want a bright and clear skin, also. Could milk be the answer to preventing of osteoporosis and keeping of clear skin?

Thierry Souccar, the author of ‘Lait, Mensonges et Propagande(우유의 역습; The counterattack of Milk)’, science professional writer and journalist from France, says devastatingly, drinking milk can bring about the opposite effect.
Milk makes a newborn calf’s weight to increase over 150kg for one year. Excessive consumption of such milk causes the chronic disease such as overweight, diabetes, breast cancer and allergy, even deteriorates. Also, milk contains the female hormone such as estrogen and progesterone, these hormones make the breast danger, and a growth factor of milk is indicated cause of prostate cancer.

So, why many people believe milk is perfect food?
The author analyzes some fact, and tells that is the answer to question. In the end of this book, it says that milk is not necessary to be best way to take calcium, and provide information that the intake and amount of calcium in each food and what food is good for keeping health.

Wonder Girls enters the top 100 of the main Billboard chart

The Wonder Girls, one of the most popular Korea’s groups(singer), and Jin-Young Park, who is producer, have the news conference about ‘The Wonder Girls’ American Billboard chart entry’ in Chungdam-dong on last October 23. ‘Nobody’, which was unveiled in the United States, ranked 76th on the October Billboard chart hot 100. The song was written by Jin-Young Park.

“It has been the first time since 1980 that an Oriental singer enters the top 100 of the main Billboard chart. We break the Orientals’ wall. We will have performance in the United States and Europe, not in Korea,” Jin-Young said.

This record has the important meaning, because a Korean singer, who has a Korean record company name and sings a Korean composer’s song, enters the top 100 of the main Billboard chart at first time.

On the interview, they spoke about their last stories, how they could enter the United States record market, and future plans. Sun-Mi wept when group members said their last difficult stories.

“When I went to America, I slept in tears every day. It took me a long time to adapt to new environment. I am too young, so I was afraid and lonely. English was difficult. But members gave me energy. I realized that I love music and dance very much,” Sun-Mi said. (She is 17 years old in Korea.)

Members said that English was the most difficult thing when they were active in the United States. So they studied English six hours each day.

Jin-Young said, “They are not the most beautiful in the world, and not the best singer and dancer in the world. But they are the smartest, the hardest and considerate girls in the world. I’m very proud of them.”

The Wonder Girls, who released an album in English in the summer, targeted American elementary school students for last seven months. It also performed on the Jonas Brothers concert tour. It met fans on a street and taught its song and dance. Through this course, it gained popularity gradually.

The Wonder Girls will release its first album in America next January. It will comprise English version of Korea hit songs and new six songs.

Now, they returned to have a rest at home for a season. Girls said that they wanted to eat 김치찌개(Kimchi soup) and 간장게장(crab preserved in soy sauce).

The Wonder Girls, the five-member band, consists of Sun-Ye(Sun), Ye-Eun(Yenny), Sun-Mi(Mimi), So-Hee and Yu-Bin. They made their debut in Korea in the last 2007, and in the United States in this summer. They belong to JYP Entertainment. In Korea, they had many hit songs, including ‘Tell Me’, ‘So hot’, and ‘Nobody’.

From next year, it will be possible to search sex criminals’ information on the internet and the number of CCTV around elementary schools will be increased.

The period of wearing an electronic anklet is going to be extended and a way to collect and use criminals’ DNA information will be included in a new bill.

Related to ‘Cho Doo - soon incident,’ the government announced that they prepared ‘children sexual violence recurrence prevention countermeasures’(아동 성폭력 재발 방지 대책) to reinforce both punishment for a child sexual abuser and social watch at a joint minister conference hosted by Park Young-joon, vice-minister of Prime Minister office.

The information of sex offenders that has been permitted to search in the police station through the internet at the moment will be changed by the government into the way that it can be searched by anybody above 20 years old, using so called ‘ 성범죄 알림e’ on the internet as a precaution of sex crimes.

At the same time, they are going to broaden ‘안심 알리미,’ telling a situation where children are on their way home or school and ‘등하교 도우미,’ helping children go and leave the school for dual- income households.

Also, in the next year the government plans to install additional 2,000 CCTV at playgrounds and the parks, children protective areas, increasing the rate of installment of CCTV at 11,259 elementary schools across the nation from 55% up to 70%.

The administration to isolate sex offenders will extend the period of wearing an electronic anklet, and revise legislation to putting on probation to criminals wearing it. Moreover the regime plans to submit a bill to collect and facilitate DNA in this year.

Also the regime plans to broaden an attendance of a psychologist in an investigation into the a sex crime to make up for lacking evidence in children’s statement and prevent secondary damage by detailed statement on a child sex crime.

Toyota 'Camry’ Challenge Hyundai Motor

‘New car effect’ will shake up the auto market


Toyota Motor officially released four models including the Camry and Prius. I think Toyota cars are still more expensive than those of Hyundai and Kia, but consumers may find stronger appeal once the price gap narrows.

As Toyota officially launched on the local market with lower price than anticipated, domestic imported car market is expected to be changed. Toyota Korea had a presentation of the new four models including Toyota brand debut and Camry with the employees of Japan headquarters at Grand Hyatt Seoul on 20th.

The Camry is priced at 34.9 million won, the hybrid version of the Camry at 45.9 million won, the Prius at 37.9 million won, and the RAV4 2WD at 32.1 million won (34.9 million won 4WD), respectively, according to industry estimates. This price is down from the expected 30-50 million-won range and is competitive even compared with domestic companies. The company aims to sell a total of 500 vehicles a month this year and 700 a month in 2010.

The Camry is likely to threat its competitors, the Honda Accord and the Nissan Altima and impact on the top-of-the-line models, Sonata and Grandeur.

In particular, medium sedan called the Camry is to be released with a low price tag of 34.9 million won. The Camry is cheaper than its rivaling models such as Honda Accord 2.4 (35.9 million won) and Nissan Altima 2.5 (36.9 million won). The Camry has an integral navigation system, rear camera, sunroof, and air bag for protecting knees. With the additional options, the Camry is more competitive. The price which is mid-priced between Hyundai’s Grandeur TG 2.7 and Sonata is expected to absorb the needs for domestic cars.

The hybrid electric car Prius is priced at 37.9 million won, from the expected over 40 million won. The Prius with its 29.2 kilometers per liter fuel economy boasts higher fuel efficiency than any other vehicle available in Korea and is popular in Japan.

The urban type SUV RAV4 is about 20 million won less expensive than Honda CR-V (36.9 million won 4WD, 33.9 million won 2WD) so the Prius is cost competitive. As RAV4
is mid-priced between Hyundai’s SUV Santa Fe and Tucson ix just as the Camry it is expected to be matched domestic cars as well as imported cars.

Toyota has the five places dealerships total including three places in Seoul (Gangnam, Seocho, Yongsan) and Bundang, Busan. Toyota is planning to open more dealerships in Daejun and Gwangju next year for the consumer’s convenience.

Toyota vice president Yukitoshi Funo who came to Korea for the launch ceremony said, “We decided to launch the Toyota brands to meet the diverse needs of Korean consumers in growing Korean market,” “We will contribute to Korean society and work hard to be loved by Korean consumers”.

The drinking culture is different as many as various countries in the world are different each other. There are some countries that people enjoy excessive drinking like our country and Russia whether there is the country which people don’t drink.
